Spook
by Mary Roach

The subtitle, "Science Tackles the Afterlife," may be true . . . but it doesn't do so in this book. What we have in Spook is a blend of science journalism, journalism, and politically incorrect humor. The author recounts her studies, travels and interviews with a variety of people who claim expertise in the field of life after death.

She goes to India to investigate reincarnation, London to explore some unsavory details about ectoplasm, Arizona to learn about a spirit communication project. The book makes a quick read, the author is at all times good-natured without being over-credulous, and at the end--I regret having to say this--you know a few new facts that won't really contribute to changing your mind about the fate of the human soul. Still, it's worth the time to read Spook.
