The Diary of Anne Frank I can't help being pleased with this design. Jay, the director, agreed with the idea that the space must be so cramped that it makes "comfort" and "privacy" nothing more than treasured memories. We decided that it was not vital to mimic the physical environment of the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam.
The common room is Down Center, with Anne's (shared) room at Stage Right. The kitchen is hard to see from this angle; it is about as big as a telephone booth and pushed way Down Left. Peter's room is on the level Left, with an invisible ladder going on up to the Van Daans' room. Under the level is the low tunnel (black curtain) and next to it the larder (white curtain). The bathroom, which plays such a central part in the action, is a blinding white room opening right off the common space, but its door is almost closed in the picture. If you are looking for more Anne Frank material, let me recommend a Dutch site, the Anne Frank pagina. Have a look even if you don't read Dutch; see in particular the section titled "Anne Fr. andere talen" (Anne Frank in other languages, including English) and, for images, any section with "foto" in the title. |
