In the course of directing a wonderful cast in this excellent play—and in the course of what promises to be a prolonged convalescence from it—I wrote up a big collection of notes. Now I am no dramaturg, though I did have the services of a fine one, and you can't expect much help with characterization and close reading. What I set out to do, instead, was identify places where you can usefully do your own research. I venture to think you will find my "companion" an aid in preparing your production.
