The Ladies of the Camellias
The two divas: Bernhardt (left) and Duse A very funny play, which I can set for you in two sentences: (1) The word diva was almost invented for Sarah Bernhardt and Eleonora Duse. (2) On a day in 1897, both these great rival actresses were getting ready to perform The Lady of the Camellias, the megahit melodrama by Alexandre Dumas the younger . . . in the same city . . . in the same week . . . in the same theater. Dina, just released after a term as Town & Gown president, is directing an excellent cast. Allen is heading the set construction job, but I brought my little camera along. |
