The Ladies of the Camellias images

Ladies of the Camellias, general view February 17

I'm sure part of the affection I feel for this set has to do with the way it looks and the way it works. But it's also the first of Allen's designs I've worked on, and that experience has been worth a lot. This view shows the look on the day of final dress rehearsal.

Ladies of the Camellias, sewing scene February 17I have no explanation for the scene at right, just a series of speculations. The fact that it's a motorized sewing machine rules out some of them; you'd scarcely see that in 1897 Paris.

Ladies of the Camellias, the chaise longue February 17The cast members of this show are really high on one another. You get them isolated, in the situation where people usually start to dish, and they brag instead. It is a real pleasure collaborating with folks who practice such a good attitude. The best-case scenario in community theater.

I promised last week that I'd give you a look at the wonderful chaise longue that Allen designed. You can see it at left. Janet put the scrollwork on, Amy sewed the cushion cover, and about half a dozen cast members helped put the thing together.

Of course the show is almost open as I write this. The anticipation is hard to take.
