The Children's Hour images
Mrs. Tilford is the Menace in the play, a small-minded person whose parlor is likewise small and awkward:
The blue lines describe the "inset" for Act 2, a li'l dark squinchy room. The three walls had to be carried in through the Up Right magic flat, then connected so that they would support one another. The fireplace unit (our Santaland fireplace and hearth, modified) would stand in front of the fireplace opening. The Act 2 room would be overfurnished, with a loveseat and so forth.
The lighting concept for this act was that the primary source would be the fire itself. A good trick, but Steve was up to it; he designed a little wagon or dolly that could be positioned just out of sight behind the opening and would throw a flickering light into the room. An excellent effect.
