Cyrano de Bergerac images
I jawboned Rick until he agreed to design the set, and a lovely job he did. If you aren't familiar with Cyrano, it's written in five acts, the action taking place in a theater, a bakery, a garden, a soldiers' camp and a convent. Rick used nearly the same ground plan for all the scenes, but added highly convincing pieces to characterize each. The theater, which you see here in the model, had a stage, proscenium, colonnade, benches and boxes; customers entered via a door on a high platform. Everything went away for the bakery and tables appeared, backed by a fantastic tapestry that Marlin created. Roxana's garden (she gets an extra syllable in Burgess' translation) made the platform into a balcony; the advanced parts of the courtship used a circular bench and some shrubbery. When the Cadets went to war, the balcony became Andy's rampart (Bobby mounted a campfire on a piece of plywood). The convent garden had, once again, a high platform for its entry, plus a spindly tree. It's lucky Jennefer was available to work as stage manager; she got everything set, hung, struck and stacked without undue fuss—all scene changes were done in full view, too.
