Cyrano de Bergerac images

The principalsIf the dim Viscount didn't know he had been in a fight, the show's principals did. They gave memorable performances one and all in this hard, hard play. Of course Cyrano (played by Jason, with the nose) was onstage the whole evening except for short rest intervals. Jason was a theater major and really nailed the part in his first three minutes of auditions. Physically, mentally and morally, he owned the role. (He later told me that he'd shared my experience of seeing Cyrano as a child and spending the rest of his life waiting for a chance to do the show.)

Gruff, dour and somewhat reserved Marlin, at your left, played Le Bret as a gruff, dour, reserved friend to Cyrano. In real life he's an artist but from time to time branches out into theater projects. Ralph, kneeling, surprised me every night with the deftness of his work as Ragueneau the baker. Costumer Amy gave him a brilliant red toque, which in turn gave him big ideas. Eric, at top, played "down" and made a convincing menace as the Count de Guiche. He was the newest computer scientist in town at the time; now, with more seniority, he's turned into a farmer as well.

At your right is Jeff, who played Christian. You often find Christian played as a stuffed animal, cute but with no depth. Though cute with his little goatee, Jeff was anything but stuffed. He dug into the part, invented things, and made you see Christian as a fully human person. Jennifer, a beauty then and now, made a Roxana with juice; you can never forget her if you saw the quickie wedding scene or heard her read Christian's last letter.
