Cyrano de Bergerac images
They sang, they danced, they swore horrible oaths (in Occitan, fortunately), they fought. And they had a secret, non-family-friendly handshake. The Cadets of Gascony made more noise and commotion than anyone else in the show. They were just a ton of fun. This photo shows them in a quiet state. A lot of these guys didn't make it through the siege of, oh my heavens, I can't recall what they were trying to capture. Some place the Cardinal didn't like. While de Guiche never fit in with these troopers, he honorably shared their famished condition before the fight.
We drew on the university as a great resource in preparing the Gascons. Sarah Spence, a professor of Occitan, taught them those horrible oaths: mordious and the like. Then she translated, and the entire corps turned pale except Eric. Gascon soldiers seem to have a bent for combining blasphemy with anatomy. Well, at least you could always hear them coming.
I didn't feel it was needful to explain Regina's and Angela's presence at the battlefield; they were probably selling fruit juice or something, though.
