The Comedy of Errors
by William Shakespeare
Town & Gown Players, 2000-1 Mainstage season

Fran adapted and directed this production and Michael Ryle designed the set. Fran's Shakespeares seem to be guided by one lodestar: If the audience doesn't think the gags are funny then they aren't. In this one they were, from the identical twin Dromios (one boy, one girl) to the background dialog in the recognition scene: "Ali!" "Baba!" She placed the action in an Arabian Nights setting, an oasis in the trackless desert standing in for Ephesus. Very effective, I thought. Sometimes I wonder how often relocated Shakespeare finds its way into student papers in later years . . . some professor is due for a jolt on reading about the "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" elements in The Comedy of Errors.

I have a selection of images, including a scan of the astounding poster that Tim created for the production; click here to view them.
