The Comedy of Errors images
The designer just said to build a false front with stumpy columns. After tumbling the matter in my mind, I decided our best approach was to make a series of units (all alike except the center one), bolted together to make a huge façade, and suspend them from the grid for stability's sake. A later image in this series shows a finished column but doesn't reveal that it is simply a muslin-covered cardboard tube; even if the building front remained vertical, I was pretty sure the tubes would not bear its weight and we'd have the minor distraction of seeing our biggest set piece slowly collapse during a performance. What you see here is the center unit and the one next to it, both hanging from their suspension lines but not bolted together yet. More columns stand in the background ready for installation.
