Godspell
Town & Gown Players, 1994-95 Mainstage season

Ground plan for Godspell 1994-95

I didn't like the property then, and I don't like it now, but the set was fun to build. The show rehearsed at Town & Gown but performances took place at the Morton Theater in downtown Athens. Everything had to come apart and go up the Morton's stairs. All you see above is the ground plan showing the platforms in outline.

The audience was supposed to think "circus," so we bought a lot of manila line and constructed a skeleton top. The fronts of all the platforms had pretty colored lights inside, and we strung Xmas lights on the manila. The stage manager and his assistant, in my concept, would arrive at midstage to find the tent all collapsed over the dark platforms; with whistles and shouts they would signal to the fly operator and the electrician, and up would go this splendid illuminated structure. Gasps of wonder and delight! Only no one explained to the S.M. that he was to be part of the spectacle, so he and the A.S.M. trudged out, somebody waved an arm, the tent took form, and the two guys walked off. It was rather deflating (but no worse than the bathetic music and lyrics that followed).
