Ground plan of the set

The first thing about the show is that it never stops. Well, after the finale, but from curtain up to curtain down there is always something happening on stage. No 45-second vamps for scene changes. And the second thing is that our house has tightly limited wing space where we can stack furniture and props. So the set has to be visually suggestive rather than defining the full richness of the South Parlor and so forth, and it has to lend itself to shifting in full view of the audience.

I'm grateful to Rick for his advice in re periaktoi (perry-AKT-oi, a Greek word meaning "huge triangular things on stage"). We'll build five of them from stock flats and revolve them to create backings for the scenes. If all goes well, the definitely lightweight staff of the mansion, performing as chorus and stage crew, will be able to turn the monsters with one hand while singing and, in some cases, dancing.

Everything else happens with furniture and lighting. At first readthrough I gave out a long plot of furniture items we must build or borrow: tennis chairs, toy chest on wheels, that kind of thing. The cast members are now at work scouring their attics. You'll see the collection as it develops.
