View of the set on February 22

It gives pleasure to a lot of people when a crowd shows up for set call. We had a fine group on our first weekend and got the bulk of the heavy construction done. Congratulations to the cast for their achievement.

Shattering news on the first readthrough, though. Director Amy canceled the accordion.

Back view of periaktoiIn the big view above, what look like walls are really pterodactyls (possibly a local pronunciation of periaktoi—see the preceding page), big carriages or wagons with sets of three flats attached. They were not nearly as hard to build as I thought, although the wooden pivot didn't work; it was too delicate and will soon be replaced by something involving iron. Andy and Nikki and the group developed a routine and got so fast and efficient I almost had to restrain them from going to hunt for more flats so they could make extra units. At right you see a little picture of the "backs" of the Center Stage pterodactyls.

The handmade sign on the leftmost unit in the large view is Andy's warning to the cast. Those flats are quite narrow and the unit is rather topheavy, and the first time he tried to move it it almost fell on him. We'll figure out a way to keep it from toppling over and annoying the cast during performances.

At your right in the top view is the bandstand. I think Town & Gown has tried every possible way to hide the ensemble, and it's nearly always led to some less-than-optimal outcome. We'll make a virtue of necessity by not only placing them onstage but also mounting chase lights on their façade.
