Left part of the set

As if the trees and ridges weren't fine enough, Carole and Karen played perspective tricks with the town part of the set. The courthouse has the only 3D features in the place, half-columns and a pediment. Everything else is painted on flats. See the street that recedes into the distance? The far end of is really closer to the camera than the near end. A terrific illusion.

Consult the ground plan again if you like. The cafe is on the flat farthest Upstage (the painted street appears to duck behind it but actually just stops at a seam); the drugstore is in front of it; the haberdashery is on the farthest Downstage flat. All the shops are parallel to one another. The enormous cast had, and needed, entrances wherever there was a gap between flats.
