Inherit the Wind images
It was good planning on my part to make sure Hue, the director, was married to a fine scenic artist, Carole, before taking on this show. Carole and her bud Karen appeared one day, after all the platforms and flats were standing, and created Hillsboro for me. We wanted to establish it as a "coming" town but one still closely tied to its land. From the courthouse Up Center, as you move toward Stage Right you get farther out in the country; as you move Left you penetrate the center of the town. Interior scenes mostly depended on the actors and the audience to create settings in the midst of this rural/urban gradient. The big courtroom scenes took place Downstage, with the judge at Right (left as you look at him) and the lawyers Center and Left; the jury sat Mid Left, on two levels, and platoons of spectators filled the rest of the space. The next two images are details of the scenic work.
