Without danger, Mr Bardolph, there is no theatre!
(Lettice Douffet to her court-appointed lawyer in Act 3)

The funny, tough-minded and dangerous comedy Lettice and Lovage will open Town & Gown's 2002-3 Mainstage season. The show calls for two women in principal roles, one man and one woman in supporting roles, and several extras. Click here for some notions about the characters.

Performance dates are Sept. 13-15 and 19-22, with a special gala preview for season ticket holders and patrons on Sept. 12. Sunday shows are 2:00 matinees; all others are 8:00 evening performances.

Like all Town & Gown Mainstage productions, Lettice and Lovage will be cast by open auditions. People Sometimes Ask these questions about T&G auditions.

Audition information

  • Monday, July 15, and Tuesday, July 16, at 7:00 p.m.
  • Callbacks Tuesday, July 16, at 7:30 p.m.
  • Auditions take place at Town & Gown (click here for directions and map).
  • Cold reading. Do not prepare a monolog. You do not need an appointment.
  • Speech: Your native way of speaking, please. The director has an irrational dislike of put-on accents in community theater. Just remember, marmalade rhymes with façade.
  • Calendar: Bring your appointment book to auditions. We will ask you to list your other engagements during the rehearsal period.
  • Age: Lettice and Lotte will play 40s or 50s; Miss Framer, younger; Mr. Bardolph, to be decided at the time.
  • Extras: Several people will play crucial parts but will have only a line or two, or none at all. If you positively want to be on stage but don't positively hanker to speak, this is the show for you.
