Lettice & Lovage ephemera Lettice & Lovage You go to see Peter Shaffer's dramas (Amadeus got a fine University Theater production last season) because of superb dialog and an unerring sense of what "works" on stage. You'll admire the same qualities in Lettice & Lovage while laughing at the warped characters and zany situations. Briefly: Lettice Douffet, docent-ing at a dull old English monument, can't resist telling fantasy stories that flood in to fill the vacuum of facts about the place. As her supervisor, Lotte Schoen, is in the act of firing her, Lettice acts out the execution of Mary, Queen of Scots. Lotte can't get the scene out of her mind, and she finds a private-sector job offer for Lettice, who celebrates the gesture by bringing out a jug of Quaff: sixteenth-century herbal hooch. Tipsy Lotte reenacts another story about the Scottish queen, and a friendship grows between the two women. Half a year later, Lettice faces criminal charges because she has beaned Lotte with an axe. In a conference with her court-appointed lawyer, she explains how "sad stories of the death of kings" grew into regular Friday evenings on the scaffold; the "assault" was a weird accident. After subverting the lawyer's professional posture, she and Lotte form a business partnership that will set London's city planners on their ear. Town & Gown opens its 2002-3 Mainstage season with a play that's funny and dangerous (but suitable for the whole family). Performances take place
