View of the set on May 2

The photo above shows our progress on Sunday, May 2, after two weekends' work. You see the three irregularly shaped levels and the two big arches. Nothing much has been painted. On the Upstage level there'll be a bed for Valmont's seductions; a set of curtains will drop in to mask it when not in use. The flanking levels will get an assortment of furniture. The crew members who managed to get themselves photographed are Zach, Derek, Marie, Mike, Brent and Brooke. Note Brent's refined sweeping technique: Everything he doesn't want onstage goes in the orchestra pit.

An arch in front viewAn arch in half-profileThe arches have a kind of postmodern look, especially when viewed dead on as at left; that will change as we trim them with molding, faux painting and so forth. Derek wanted them extra-wide so the ladies in their five-foot dresses could pass without getting stuck, so the clear opening in each one is three and a half feet. The photo at right reveals some of the skin on the arches; we're using hardware cloth and drywall mud. In my continuing (probably endless) program to improve all my friends' vocabulary, I am using the unarguably correct words intrados and extrados to describe the faces of the arch structures. (The intrados is the surface you can touch as you walk through the arch, and the extrados is the one that the arch displays to the rest of the world.) Everybody else seems to prefer "inside" and "outside," but no, that won't do.

On the weekend of Mothers' Day we should finish skinning the doses and probably hang the curtains and get a base coat on everything.
