The Misanthrope images
Most of my designs feature more-or-less strong asymmetry—I get out of patience with too much squareness—but it seemed clear that director Steven's needs here outweighed my distaste. The design was almost perfectly mirror-image. Upstage Center stood the main double door, on a level 40 inches above the deck. The double spiral stairway defined a focal area Downstage Center. Two big doors stood in deep bays Downstage; two smaller ones, in shallow bays Upstage for servants and miscellaneous traffic. A painting hung on the Left wall at the shoulder of the stairs and a "killed" mirror opposite it at Right.
