Post Mortem images
The gargoyle—it had a name that I've forgotten now—was one of John's touches. It would not have looked like much, pretty small on a pretty wide stage, but for Toby's excellent lighting design. In the big photo of the set, you can see this feature against the spandrel, if that's the word I want, anyway on the flat part of the wall between the two big arches.
Again, the lighting made this piece work. There's a departed wronged woman in the deep backstory of the play, and toward the end of the second act this portrait, which had been hanging tamely on the wall Stage Left, suddenly began to blaze. It was a terrific effect.
