View of the set on June 6

It's a funny thing. The best place to view the set is out in the auditorium, so you generally see the Downstage end of an Upstage-facing crew member. Here are Matt, somebody else—maybe it's Palmer—Lindsay and Patty base-coating the deck. Way in the distance maybe you can spot Alyssa cleaning paintbrushes (see the other page).

Matt's design is well-suited to Second Stage conditions. It took only a couple of hours to erect and another hour to paint. Gang-painting is a good illustration of two theater principles: Many hands make light work and Everybody's got an opinion. I think there was a moment when eight cast members were at work on the medium-sized brown arcade. A shortage of roller extension handles cut down the number who could do the floor, though.

Stone effects will follow, courtesy of Janet, who did such fine work on Post Mortem a few years ago.

The day after I made this photo, I constructed a bier for the dead King Henry VI. He will want to hold very, very still so as not to turn the ladder on its side.
