The Rover design proposal
The design proposal followed director John's concept of placing nearly all the scenes as exteriors. The plan starts with a central piazza, a raised walk or street enclosing it (the numbers indicate heights above the stage level), and three houses fronting on the walk. Behind the houses is a painted sky. The houses are cartoony: bright colors, flat fronts, little detail. By a miracle of geometry, the gap in the sky behind each house (marked XXX, for the actors' entrances and exits) is invisible to the audience. The two Downstage entrances are extra-wide to allow for Mardi Gras costumes. One scene, the one where Lucetta plays the army game on Ned Blount, became an interior. A later page in this series will explain the idea.
