Crew on October 9With a nearly final plan in hand and instructions to build from stock units, we made excellent progress on the first of our planned three weekends (October 9-10). Here are a couple of quick ones of the crew taking a break late in the day. Facing you from left to right are Hue, Geneviève, Will and Amber; Brooke is facing away. In the background, way up high in the shadows, is Judge Nigaud's attic window. The next day we brought the window down to the deck so I could do a small repair; it was a salvage piece (from the yard at the Habitat for Humanity store) and had suffered the prolonged attack of the elements. Somebody asked what needed to be repaired, and I knocked with one knuckle on the old sill. The entire bottom of the window then fell off. So I was right, it did need a fix.

Our crew had better skills than the average Town & Gown collection. Nearly everybody was up to using an electric screwdriver, and at least two people knew that when plywood is being sawed it's helpful to go and stand on one end to keep it from shifting around.

Crew on October 9Trouble was, they didn't bring tunes. Crew members always bring CDs. This time, when Steven's swing music ran out, that was the end.

Both these photos show a round white object. Steven mined the script for prop cues and found the porter Petit-Jean (played by the second-biggest actor I've seen on this stage, and the biggest was a Georgia sheriff's deputy, that will give you some idea) referring to a layer cake. So he bought some poly foam and built a cake. At this early date it doesn't have the icing, so it is still jugglable, and Will and Brooke each took a turn.

The next image shows our first weekend's progress. On the 16th and 17th we begin painting—in fact we should get pretty near done with the painting. I hope we'll finish the set on the 24th and have the last weekend before Tech Week idle. But that remains in the lap of the gods.
