The Tempest images
Claire has done a fine job in lighting the show. Karen the propmistress has her hands full because Prospero keeps destroying the jingly stuff that director Steven hangs on his staff. First the Boggle hourglass came to grief in a dress rehearsal, then during the Act 2 fight scene on T.B.N. the fleamarket pocket watch broke into smallish fragments. It begins to seem that the only thing P. can't destroy would be a stone sundial. Even the Book isn't immune; instead of two pages separating from the spine, the spine tore away that evening and had to be hurriedly stashed behind a platform. The stage management team, Carina and Sarah, acted heroically to prevent Caliban getting strangled in the ship's rigging. The "retract" phase in the transition from Scene 1 to 2 didn't work, so the King of Naples and his entourage had to work around a large rope stretched diagonally across their playing area. The crew inserted a blackout in order to strike the gaff, and everything continued normally. (In the next performance, one of the ropes fouled on the Down Left tree stump and remained throughout Act 1.) The train of Prospero's robe gets alternately longer and shorter. The first part is hard to explain--my theory is rag fatigue--but the second part is simple: Ariel steps on the end and it rips off. So this Tempest is a continuing adventure.
