Lady Windermere's Fan images

Brad flogging the setThe set made a lot of history. What you see here is Brad working on the back wall, which eventually would represent the hallway outside the big center door. He is using an implement called a flogger, several strips of heavy canvas attached to a wooden handle. Dipping the flogger in blue paint, Brad next turns to the wall and, well, whips it. The effect is one of the styles of Victorian exuberance, a wallpaper with wild sprays of color.

Exuberance is where all the trouble started, I think. Director Julie may have regarded "Victorian" and "exuberance" as opposite concepts, and I was not present at the crucial moment of decisionmaking to explain the mind-expanding consequences of the 19th century for English society. So the flogged wallpaper went away the week after this photo was made. A pity, in my view; the contrast of the sedate interior with the view of this bold hallway was very effective. But these things happen. Lavender walls are nice too.
