Town & Gown 50 anniversary planning committee:
Report to the May 2001 membership meeting

Note: Names don't appear in full in this version. See your "Envoy" if you don't already know who makes up the committee.

President R. named Florence K., John V., Amy M. and Harriet A. as members and Ben T. as head of a committee to plan for Town & Gown's fiftieth anniversary observances. The April board meeting approved the following recommendations:

  1. We will celebrate our half-century in the 2003-4 season, which contains the anniversary of the first Town & Gown opening night: March 30, 1954. Calendar freaks will already know that March 30, 2004 falls on a Tuesday.
  2. Social events will concentrate on the period of March to May 2004 and will include some sort of reunion.
  3. That Mainstage season will honor both our history and our most cherished tradition. Titles will include one show that premiered in each of our decades—the 1950s, the 60s, the 70s, the 80s and the 90s, plus one musical—but all six will be new to us. The decades need not come in order.
  4. Second Stage will feature at least two "specials": a retrospective "taste of" shows we love to remember and a musical revue.
  5. We'll record interviews with early participants as well as current members, focusing on both history and high points, and edit the tapes into programs we can use as lobby attractions or preshow features.
  6. Lobby decorations will go by decades but will focus strongly on people who were active in Town & Gown then.
  7. We'll prepare a necrology as part of the focus on people we remember.
  8. The celebration will need money, but not very much right away: In 2001-2 and 2002-3, we will incur mainly clerical expenses and possibly minor costs for video recording and production. In preparation for 2003-4, we will seek funding for parties in the spring plus royalties and expenses for the special Second Stage events.

The committee will resume its meetings in the fall.
